When gemologists and auction houses describe a sapphire as "Burmese" or an emerald as "Colombian," they're not simply noting geography — they're making a statement about likely quality, color character, and value. Origin is one of the most significant value factors in fine gemstones, sometimes adding a premium of 30–100% or more over stones from other localities, even when visual quality appears similar.

Asia: The Ancient Gem Heartland

Myanmar (Burma)

Myanmar is home to some of the world's most legendary gem deposits. The Mogok Stone Tract in northern Myanmar has been mined for over a thousand years and produces:

  • Ruby — "Pigeon's blood" rubies with a vivid red and strong fluorescence; the most prized in the world
  • Sapphire — Rich royal blue stones of exceptional transparency
  • Spinel — Including the famous red "Balas rubies" of antiquity

Sri Lanka (Ceylon)

Sri Lanka's gem-bearing gravels (illam) have been producing gemstones for millennia. The island is famously diverse:

  • Sapphire — Lighter, silkier "Ceylon blue" sapphires; also padparadscha, the rare pink-orange variety
  • Cat's-eye chrysoberyl — Sri Lanka dominates the world market for this gem

Colombia

Colombia has dominated emerald production for centuries. The Muzo, Chivor, and Coscuez mines produce emeralds with a distinctive "Colombian green" — a warm, slightly yellowish green prized above all other emerald origins. Colombian emeralds also tend to have fewer iron inclusions, giving them stronger red fluorescence and more vivid color.

Brazil

Brazil is a gemstone giant — one of the world's most diverse producers:

  • Topaz — Ouro Preto is the source of the finest Imperial Topaz
  • Emerald — From Bahia and Minas Gerais; generally more included but commercially significant
  • Tourmaline, aquamarine, alexandrite, and amethyst — All produced in quantity

Zambia

Zambia's Kafubu mining area now rivals Colombia as a source of world-class emeralds. Zambian emeralds tend to be darker green with bluish secondary hues and generally higher clarity than Colombian stones, making them appealing to a growing segment of buyers.

Mozambique

Mozambique has emerged as one of the world's leading ruby producers, with material from the Montepuez deposit reaching top auction houses globally. While stylistically different from Burmese ruby, fine Mozambique rubies now command serious prices in the international market.

Tanzania

Tanzania is the sole source of tanzanite, the extraordinary blue-violet zoisite found only near Mount Kilimanjaro. It also produces fine sapphires, spessartite garnet, and tsavorite garnet.

How Origin Is Verified

Gemological laboratories use several sophisticated techniques to determine origin:

  1. Inclusion analysis — Characteristic mineral inclusions are often region-specific
  2. Trace element chemistry — LA-ICP-MS testing reveals chemical fingerprints unique to certain deposits
  3. Spectroscopy — Absorption patterns can confirm or rule out certain origins

Origin determination is not always definitive — even top labs occasionally issue "could not be determined" opinions. For high-value purchases, seek stones with origin certificates from respected institutions like GRS, Gübelin, AGL, or GIA.

Ethical Sourcing: An Increasingly Important Factor

Beyond value, buyers are increasingly asking about the conditions under which gems are mined. Look for stones with traceable supply chains and ask sellers about sourcing practices. Certifications and responsible sourcing programs are growing in the industry, giving conscientious buyers more transparency than ever before.
